It’s safe to say that identical twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye are the most popular artists in Africa and quickly becoming one the most successful outside of the Western Hemisphere. My music blog would not be a legitimate music blog if I didn’t include the brothers. Their success the past couple years has been unparalleled by local African artists. In the seven, almost eight months I’ve been here in Dar, I’ve heard one constant hit after another. There honestly hasn’t been a night I’ve gone out where I haven’t witnessed a P Square song NOT INSTANTLY flood the dance floor when it’s played. They recently signed to Akon’s Konvict label, after having commanded $200,000 plus per international show, and roughly $130,000 at home in Nigeria. and 1 million plus views for almost all their music videos the past couple years. In 2012, 5 months after signing with Konvict music, the brothers signed a huge distribution deal with Universal Music, South Africa.
The twins have been pursuing music for a long time going back to their middle school days when they joined their school music and drama club. They emulated their heroes, Michael Jackson, Hammer and Bobby Brown and performed their songs in shows around town. As teens they had 2 main groups before becoming a duo. MMMPP was a singing dancing, crew and when they started break dancing, they formed a crew called the Smooth Criminals. They became very popular around Jos for their unique school function performances and others.
In 2001, P-Square won the Grab Da Mic competition, held by Benson & Hedges and the award was a full sponsorship for their album, ‘Last Nite’.’Last Nite’ was released under theTimbuk2 label. The album brought them a lot of attention and they were nominated for the “Most Promising African Group” at the Kora awards only 3 months after the album dropped. It wasn’t until 2003, when they won the Amen Award for “Best R&B Group”.
By 2005, P Square had their own label, Square Records and released their second album, Get Squared. It was a huge success and sold 10 millions albums, with one of the singles holding the #1 position on MTV Base chart for a month. Their album, Game Over’, came in 2007 with 8 million sold so far worldwide. Their album ‘Danger’ sold 1 million copies in one week
On 4, April 2010, P-Square won $1 million for being named Artist of the year at the KORA All AFRICA Music Awards, held in Burkina Faso. Their last 3 album have gone platinum and with the huge popularity of the new album’s single, Alingo, Oninye and, Chop My Money, is definitely headed toward platinum status rapidly. P Square mostly handle their own production in house.
